Sigur Rós is an Icelandic post-rock band formed in Reykjavík in January 1994 by Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson (guitar and vocals), Georg Holm (bass), and Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson (drums). The band is renowned for its ethereal sound, characterized by Jónsi's falsetto vocals and the use of bowed guitar, blending classical and minimalist elements. The name "Sigur Rós," meaning "Victory Rose" in Icelandic, was inspired by Jónsi's newborn sister. Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson retired after the release of the second album and was succeeded by Orri Páll Dýrason. Kjartan Sveinsson joined the band on keyboards in 1998 but left in 2013. Orri Páll Dýrason departed in 2018 amid allegations of sexual assault, stating, "I cannot have these serious allegations influence the band and the important and beautiful work that has been done there for the last years." In February 2022, it was announced that Kjartan Sveinsson would return to the band. As of November 2022, the line-up includes Jón Þór Birgisson (guitar, vocals), Georg Holm (bass guitar), Kjartan Sveinsson (keyboards), and Ólafur Björn Ólafsson (drums, brass, organ).
