Silk Rhodes is a Baltimore duo consisting of Sasha Winn and Michael Collins, known for their throwback style that pays homage to early-Seventies soul. They gained attention in the hip-hop community when their disco track "Face 2 Face" was featured in the documentary Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton, which highlights the California indie label Stones Throw. Founded by Peanut Butter Wolf, who is a fan of the duo, Stones Throw will release Silk Rhodes's debut full-length album, showcasing their minimalist and precise sound. The duo's creative process began while touring together with separate projects. They transformed their car, a '97 Honda CRV, into an impromptu recording studio while traveling through the Southwest, particularly Arizona. This setup allowed them to create vocal processing and long-form meditative music. After the tour, they settled in Baltimore and continued making music together, often engaging with friends and strangers on the streets to create songs that resonated with their sidewalk audiences. Their unique sound, characterized by bass-heavy pitch-shifting, attracted impressive crowds during their performances.
