Single Cell Orchestra, the alias of Miguel Fierro, is a prominent figure in the San Francisco Bay Area's experimental electronic music scene, which has also produced notable artists like Spacetime Continuum and Heavenly Music Corporation. Fierro's work spans various styles of electronica, from the straightforward club sounds of his Zoe Magick projects to the ambient-electro of his Reflective releases and the mid-tempo head music showcased in his 1996 Asphodel debut. Growing up as the son of a jazz drummer, he was influenced by post-bop and '70s jazz legends such as Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis. His journey into music began with a friend's low-budget keyboard, leading him to experiment with different bands before pursuing a solo career inspired by his DJ brother's work in freestyle and house music production. Fierro's initial tracks were released through the West Coast dance label Zoe Magick, with "Transmit Liberation" from the "Liberated EP" becoming an underground classic that anticipated the lazy, instrumental "trip-hop" style later popularized by labels like Mo'Wax. He later collaborated with Jonah Sharp's Reflective label, releasing the "Angelic Science" EP in 1994 and the full-length sci-fi electro opera, Dead Vent 7, in 1995. His self-titled debut album for the Asphodel imprint, released in 1996, revisited the warm breakbeat style of "Transmit Liberation" and incorporated elements of house and minimal ambient
