Sir Mack Rice was a singer, songwriter, and producer born on November 10, 1933, in Clarksdale, Mississippi. A prolific songwriter, he registered 434 work titles with BMI publishing. Rice was a member of the vocal group The Falcons from 1957 to 1963. In 1965, he wrote and released "Mustang Sally," his greatest hit as a solo artist, which was covered the following year by a fellow ex-Falcon. Later, he joined Stax Records, where he co-composed songs such as "Respect Yourself" (recorded in 1971), "Do The Funky Penguin" (also in 1971), and "Cheaper To Keep Her" (in 1973). While at Stax, he also sang with another group, joining them in 1970. Sir Mack Rice passed away on June 27, 2016, in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A., due to complications related to Alzheimer's disease.
