Sister Sledge is an American musical group formed in 1971, originally consisting of sisters Debbie, Joni, Kathy, and Kim. Known for their work during the late-1970s disco era, the group was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when the sisters were between the ages of 12 and 16. They recorded their first single, "Time Will Tell," for a Philly-based label and initially called themselves Sisters Sledge. In 1972, Sister Sledge signed with a new label and released their second single, "Weatherman," followed by "Mama Never Told Me" in 1973. Their major commercial success came in 1979 when Chic leaders Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards produced "We Are Family," which propelled them to stardom. The hits "He's the Greatest Dancer" and the album's title track both reached number one on the R&B charts in the US. Kathy left the group in 1989 to pursue a solo career, and Joni passed away on March 10, 2017. In mid-2019, Kim also left the group. As of 2025, Debbie performs as part of "Sister Sledge featuring Sledgendary," alongside her daughter, son David Sledge, nephew Thaddeus Sledge, and another vocalist. Meanwhile, Kathy performs with "Sister Sledge Live feat. Kathy Sledge," accompanied by guest vocalists and dancers.
