The Sisters of Mercy is a rock band formed in Leeds, UK, in 1980 by singer and guitarist Andrew Eldritch. They were soon joined by a drummer, known as a stage name for a long succession of drum machines. The band's music features dark subject matter, literary references, and cavernous reverb, which led the music press to label them as a “goth rock” act, a description the band has always rejected. Their debut album was not released until 1985, and the lineup that recorded it split shortly after. To prevent departing members from renaming themselves, Eldritch hurriedly released his own album under the band's name; those members instead formed a new group. Eldritch then rebooted the Sisters as a duo with bassist Craig Adams. The 1987 album prominently featured synthesizers. In 1990, the Sisters returned to live performance after a five-year absence, promoting a new album recorded mainly by Eldritch and guitarist Wayne Hussey. Two further singles followed, but a long feud with their record company ensued. Although the band has continued to tour regularly with various lineups, playing a mix of old and new songs, there has been no new Sisters release since 1993.
