Sizzla, born Miguel Collins on April 17, 1976, in August Town, Kingston, Jamaica, is a prominent figure in Jamaican music known for his energetic singjay style and spiritual lyrics. He began his musical journey as a singer for Caveman Hi-Fi and gained acclaim with his 1995 debut album, "Burning Up." His 1997 follow-up, "Black Woman & Child," marked an international breakthrough, earning him the 1998 MOBO award and recognition in various magazines' top 100 albums of the year. During this time, he was associated with Phillip Burrel's XTerminator label and toured with artists like Luciano. Prolific even by Jamaican standards, Sizzla has released over 30 albums and more than 400 singles since 1995. Despite some fans expressing concern over the quality of his extensive output, he continues to surprise listeners with quality albums. However, Sizzla's career has not been without controversy. After 2000, he faced backlash for his partly homophobic lyrics, which offended European listeners and gay-right organizations. His explicit descriptions of sexual issues and extravagant lifestyle led to a rift with fellow Rastafarians, including Luciano and the Bobo Ashanti order, whose elders distanced themselves from his music and lifestyle, although he still identifies as a Bobo Ashanti member.
