The Skatalites, formed in May 1964, comprised notable musicians including Tommy McCook, Rolando Alphonso, Johnny Moore, Lester Sterling, Don Drummond, Lloyd Knibb, Lloyd Brevett, Jerry Haynes, and Jackie Mittoo. The group originated from a collective of musicians who began working together in 1963, with McCook, Drummond, Moore, and Sterling being students at a renowned institution in Kingston. The band's journey took a significant turn in August 1965 when they played their last show following Don Drummond's confinement to Bellevue Hospital for the murder of his girlfriend. This led to the formation of two studio bands, The Soul Brothers and another unnamed group. The membership of The Skatalites was fluid, with Jackie Mittoo and Rolando Alphonso being consistent presences. After a long hiatus, the band reformed in 1983 and remains active today, despite the passing of many original members.
