Slade is an English rock band from Wolverhampton, originally formed as Ambrose Slade in January 1969. The original lineup included Don Powell on drums, Dave Hill on guitar and vocals, Jim Lea on bass guitar and violin, and Noddy Holder as lead vocalist and guitarist. The band was renamed Slade in December 1969 and enjoyed significant success until 1992, achieving seventeen consecutive Top 20 hits and six number one singles during the glam rock era of the early 1970s. They were recognized as the most successful British group of the 1970s by the British Hit Singles & Albums, with their best-selling single, "Merry Xmas Everybody," selling over one million copies. Throughout their career, Slade underwent several lineup changes, resulting in various versions of the band. After the original lineup, Slade II was formed, which went through multiple iterations from 1992 to 2000. The band was later renamed Slade (Version 2) and continued performing until 2019, followed by Slade (Version 5) and then Slade (Version 6) from 2020 onwards. While Slade struggled to make a significant impact in the United States, they influenced numerous American bands, including Kiss and Cheap Trick, who admired their songwriting and energetic stage presence. After Noddy Holder and Jim Lea left, the remaining members briefly performed under a different name before returning to the original name Slade.
