Slave was a funk group formed in Dayton, Ohio, by horn player, songwriter, and producer Steve Washington, a New Jersey native with a connection to funk through his uncle, Ralph 'Pee Wee' Middlebrook of the Ohio Players. The band was known for their edgy funk grooves that rivaled contemporary street music. Their album "Stone Jam," released in September 1980 by Cotillion/Atlantic, came out after Washington had left the group to form another band called Aurra. Following him, Steve Arrington, the drummer and vocalist, also departed to pursue a solo career, which resulted in significant funk classics such as "Way Out" and "Nobody Can Be You But You."
