Sleater-Kinney is an alternative rock band formed in 1994 in Olympia, Washington, and later relocated to Portland, Oregon. They emerged from the Riot Grrrl scene of the 1990s and are known for being one of the few bands to endure the backlash that followed the movement. Initially, Sleater-Kinney was a side project for Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker. The band's first permanent drummer, who was born in Australia, joined in late 1994, and in 1997, a new drummer took over. After recording several albums, Sleater-Kinney entered an unfamiliar studio with a new producer in late 2004 to create their first album for Sub Pop. In the summer of 2006, they announced an "indefinite hiatus" and played their final U.S. shows in August. Throughout their 11-year run, the members were involved in various other musical projects. In 2019, drummer Janet Weiss announced her departure from the band, which now consists of a core duo: Carrie Brownstein (guitar, vocals) and Corin Tucker (guitar, vocals).
