Sofia Rosa, born Fernando Sofia Rosa in Ambriz, northern Bengo province, was a renowned singer and composer from Angola. He grew up in the Samba district of Luanda, where he learned the Kimbundu language and traditions from local fishermen and tradeswomen. In 1963, he joined the "Agrupamento Teatral Ngongo," founded by José de Oliveira Fontes Pereira, and made appearances on television in Portugal. He recorded his first single in 1970 and went on to release seven more. As a great interpreter of songs in Kimbundu, he expressed the life and emotions of common people, notably praising women's beauty in his song "Kalumba." Sofia Rosa gained fame through his extraordinary performances, often adorned in African textiles, and was associated with "Os Corvos" band but truly shone with "The Astros," recording hits like "Ngue Xile Ku Tunda Bu Sambila," "Makuinhadi ya Mivu," and "Imbua Iolo Bosa." His music resonated with the feelings of love and perseverance, capturing the essence of life in Angolan neighborhoods and events. In 1973, he moved to Lobito, but his life was tragically cut short in November 1975 when he was murdered, likely by UNITA forces, due to his known support for the MPLA.
