Soft Cell is an English synthesizer duo that gained prominence in the early 1980s. They achieved worldwide success in 1981 with their cover of "Tainted Love," originally a northern soul classic, which was followed by several charting singles and one of the first remix albums, "Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing." Their self-penned non-album single narrowly missed the No.1 spot on the UK charts. In 1982, they released "The Art Of Falling Apart," produced with Mike Thorne and featuring the new CMI Fairlight synthesizer, which included two singles, "Where The Heart Is" and "Numbers," that did not perform well commercially. The tension between commercial pressures and artistic ambitions led to solo projects and two farewell shows in January 1984, prior to the release of their third album, "This Last Night... In Sodom." Their lyrics often explored themes of love, romance, nightlife, sex, transvestism, drugs, murder, and youthful frustration. Almond and Ball reunited in the early 2000s, touring and releasing a fourth studio album, "Cruelty Without Beauty," in 2002. They came together again for a final live show in 2018, along with the recording of a new single.
