Soft Machine is an English rock and jazz band formed in mid-1966 in Canterbury, named after the novel "The Soft Machine" by William S. Burroughs. The band has been active in various capacities from 1966 to the present, with multiple periods of activity: 1966–1968, 1969–1978, 1978–1983 (as an offshoot band), followed by 1980–1984, 1999–2002 (as the pre-reformation band Soft Ware), 2002–2004 (as another pre-reformation band), 2004–2015, and from 2015 to the present. The current lineup includes members on guitar, saxophone, flute, piano, bass, and drums. The band has also seen guest and substitute musicians, particularly in live performances. Throughout its history, Soft Machine has had numerous former members, including musicians who contributed to various instruments such as keyboards, drums, saxophone, and more. The band has experienced changes in its lineup over the years, with several members having passed away. Soft Machine continues to perform and remain active in the music scene today.
