Ousmane Sow Huchard, known by his stage name Soleya Mama, was a prominent Senegalese figure born on December 5, 1942, in Ziguinchor. He passed away on July 1, 2020, in Dakar, Senegal. Huchard was a multifaceted individual, recognized as a politician, ecologist, museologist, art critic, museum curator, international consultant, and musicologist. As a musician, he was a founding member of the Dakar University Sextet in 1964 and later established his own group, Le Waatoo Sita, in 1970. This experimental ensemble sought to fuse Western instruments with traditional West African instruments, including the kora, tam-tam, bugeer, balafon, and bass bolong.
