Solomon Burke was a prominent US soul singer, born on March 21, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 as a performer. Burke, also known as Solomon Vincent McDonald Burke, began his career in music by recording for Apollo in 1954. He briefly left the music industry to attend mortuary school but returned in 1960. In addition to his music career, Burke was known for his preaching and broadcasting from his own church, "Solomon's Temple," in Philadelphia, where he served as the "Wonder Boy Preacher" from 1945 to 1955. The church was founded for him by his grandmother. He was a member of The Soul Clan and was married twice, with several children. Burke passed away on October 10, 2010, at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
