Som Imaginário was a pioneering Brazilian rock band formed in 1970 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Initially created to back Milton Nascimento on his early recordings and tours, the band featured key members including keyboardist Wagner Tiso, guitarist Frederiko (Frederyko), Tavito, bassist Luiz Alves, and drummer Robertinho Silva, with Zé Rodrix participating on their debut album. Deeply connected to the Clube da Esquina collective alongside Nascimento and Lô Borges, they blended psychedelic/prog rock, jazz fusion, MPB, and traditional Brazilian rhythms. Their groundbreaking albums include their self-titled debut in 1970 and a follow-up in 1971, showcasing cosmic guitar solos, experimental jams, and countercultural themes amid Brazil's military dictatorship. Their 1973 album, Matança do Porco, delved into fusion territory, influencing Brazilian psych/prog while navigating censorship with metaphorical lyrics and instrumental skill. By the mid-1970s, the band disbanded, but its members continued to work as elite session musicians in the MPB and jazz scenes.
