Som Imaginário was a pioneering Brazilian rock band formed in 1970 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Initially created to support Milton Nascimento on his early recordings and tours, the band featured key members including keyboardist Wagner Tiso, guitarist Frederiko (Frederyko), Tavito, bassist Luiz Alves, and drummer Robertinho Silva, with Zé Rodrix participating on their debut album. Deeply connected to the Clube da Esquina collective alongside Nascimento and Lô Borges, Som Imaginário blended psychedelic/prog rock, jazz fusion, MPB, and traditional Brazilian rhythms. Their groundbreaking albums, including their self-titled debut in 1970 and the 1971 follow-up, showcased cosmic guitar solos, experimental jams, and countercultural themes during Brazil's military dictatorship. The 1973 album Matança do Porco further explored fusion territory, influencing Brazilian psych/prog while navigating censorship through metaphorical lyrics and instrumental prowess. The band disbanded by the mid-1970s, but its members continued to thrive as elite session musicians in MPB and jazz circles.
