Sonic Youth was formed in New York City in 1981, initially consisting of guitarist/vocalists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo, bassist/vocalist Kim Gordon, and drummer Richard Edson. Emerging from the No-Wave music scene of the late 1970s, the band was rooted in abrasive, experimental music, with Moore and Ranaldo having prior experience with experimental composers. In 1985, drummer Steve Shelley joined, and the band went on to record 15 albums along with numerous side and solo projects. Their work has been recognized for its challenging and innovative nature, solidifying their status as one of the most influential bands of their time, particularly highlighted by the strength of their record "Sonic Nurse," which featured Jim O'Rourke, who left the band in 2005. Mark Ibold joined in 2006. In September 2011, Sonic Youth entered an "indefinite hiatus" following the separation of Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, who had been married since 1984. The band's first studio was in New York City, later relocating to Hoboken, New Jersey. Final lineup: - Kim Gordon – vocals, bass, guitar, trumpet (1981–2011) - Thurston Moore – vocals, guitar (1981–2011) - Lee Ranaldo – guitar, vocals, keyboards (1981–2011) - Steve Shelley – drums (1985–2011) - Mark
