Sonny Thompson was an American R&B pianist, songwriter, and bandleader, born on August 22, 1916 (or 1923) in Centreville, Mississippi. He passed away on August 11, 1989, in Chicago, Illinois. Thompson began his recording career in 1946 and achieved notable success in 1948 with two #1 R&B hits on the Miracle label: "Long Gone (Parts I and II)" and "Late Freight." By the early 1950s, he transitioned to King Records, where he worked in A&R and as a session musician and arranger. At King, he collaborated with a singer who later became his wife in 1954, achieving further R&B Top 10 successes. Thompson's extensive songwriting and production credits, along with his early blues and jazz instrumentals, significantly influenced the early course of rock music, marking his most lasting legacy.
