Sonny Bono was an American producer, arranger, and songwriter, born on February 16, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan. He is best known for his musical collaborations with Cher, to whom he was married for 11 years. Notable songs he wrote include hits like "I Got You Babe" and "The Beat Goes On." Later in his career, Bono transitioned from show business to politics and was elected as a Republican to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994, representing California's 44th District until his death. Tragically, on January 5, 1998, he died from severe injuries after accidentally hitting a tree while skiing at Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe.
