Sonny Chillingworth was born on July 14, 1932, in Honolulu. He spent his childhood living with his grandparents on Moloka'i from the age of 12. At the age of 15, he met Gabby Pahinui, whose 78 RPM recording of "Hi'ilawe" inspired him as a young teenager. Sonny was honored as a 2013 inductee into the Lifetime Achievement Awards of the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. He passed away on August 24, 1994.
