Sonny Rollins, born on September 7, 1930, in New York City, is an acclaimed American jazz tenor saxophonist, recognized as one of the most important and influential figures in jazz music. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with numerous jazz greats. Rollins was honored with the Polar Music Prize in May 2007 and received the National Medal of Arts from the President in March 2011. He is a two-time Grammy Award winner, having received awards for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group and for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for "Why Was I Born?"
