Sons of Freedom was a Canadian alternative rock band active in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Formed in 1987 in Vancouver, British Columbia, the band comprised vocalist James Newton, guitarist Don Harrison, bassist Don Binns, and drummer Don Short. They derived their name from a controversial Doukhobor activist group that was active in Saskatchewan and British Columbia during the early 20th century. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1988, featured a notable slogan from social justice activist Nellie McClung: "Never retract, never retreat, never apologise...get the thing done and let them howl." In 1991, their album "Gump" debuted at #1 on the Canadian campus radio charts, surpassing Nirvana's "Nevermind," which entered at #2 the same week. The band disbanded in 1993 but briefly reunited in 1995 to tour in support of a rarities compilation titled "Tex." Following the breakup, Binns, Short, and Harrison joined Lee Aaron in the band 2preciious. In 2008, Jim Newton launched a new project called Rat Silo, which currently features Don Binns (bass), Finn Manniche (guitar), Dave Osborne (keyboards), and Sean Stubbs (drums).
