Sons Of Slum was an American funk band hailing from Chicago, Illinois, formed in either 1962 or 1964 and disbanded in 1978. The band originated from a group of college friends and gained recognition for backing various local artists, including Otis Clay, Garland Green, and Syl Johnson. Initially managed by an unnamed individual, they released a single on the Gamma label during their downtime from touring with Mel's acts. Their second manager guided them to tour as a backup band for The Emotions and secured a contract with Stax, where they recorded an unreleased album, although Stax did release two singles from them. Under the management of local promoter Ken Freeman, they signed with Capitol Records, recording a second album that also went unreleased. Following their departure from Capitol, the band self-financed the recording of a third album, which was eventually released in 2018. The members of Sons Of Slum included James Bennett, Wade Allen Jr. (guitar), PT. & Frank Griegs (guitar & vocals), Tommy Thomas (guitar), Maurice Bell (trumpet & drums), Daktari (congas), Margie Stroud & Derrick P. Jackson (piano & keyboards), Darnell McCoy (saxophone), Frank McClour & Gregory Moore (bass & guitar), Walter Thigpen Jr. (trumpet), and Kevin D. Rowan & Ronnie (drums, guitars & keyboards
