Sontag Shogun is a collaborative trio based in Brooklyn, New York, known for their unique blend of analog sound treatments and nostalgic solo piano compositions. The group aims to evoke abstract places in memory through textures created from organic materials such as sand, slate, boiling water, brush, and dried leaves. These sounds are produced live during performances and recorded onto weathered 1/4" tape, complementing lush piano themes. Their work is further enhanced by treated vocals and a live-processed feed from the piano, creating a reflective digital space. Sontag Shogun's performances are likened to a wordless journey, emphasizing the exploration of emotions and memories over the destination itself. The trio consists of Ian Temple on piano and organ, Jeremy Young on tapes, oscillators, and contact mics, and Jesse Perlstein on laptop, field recordings, and voice. They have shared the stage with notable artists including Hauschka, Julia Kent, Matana Roberts, Oren Ambarchi, Aki Onda, David Grubbs, Tom Carter, Ben Vida, Fly Pan Am, Greg Fox, Christopher Bissonnette, Hans Appelqvist, Chris Forsyth, Mountains, Sam Shalabi, Noveller, Helena Espvall, and Christopher Tignor, among others.
