S.O.U.L, which stands for The Sounds Of Unity and Love, was formed in 1970 in Cleveland. The group quickly gained recognition after winning first prize in a talent show, which resulted in a record deal with Musicor Records. The members of S.O.U.L—Larry Hancock, Lee Lovett, Gus Hawkins, Paul Stubblefield, and Bernard Taylor—had all been performing locally prior to their formation. Their debut single for Musicor, "Down In The Ghetto," was released in 1971 and achieved enough success to encourage the label to invest further in the group. Between 1971 and 1974, S.O.U.L released another seven singles under the Musicor label. They also recorded one record for the Dynamo label, a subsidiary of Musicor Records, in 1975 before the members went their separate ways.
