Their breakthrough came when a Philadelphia DJ introduced them to Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records, leading to a small hit with "Some Kinda Wonderful," written by Ellison, in 1967. This song became their most successful record, reaching number 91 on the Top 100. The Fantastic Johnny C later took the song four slots higher, while Grand Funk Railroad achieved significant success with it, reaching number three on the pop charts in 1974. John Ellison, a coal miner's son from West Virginia, began playing guitar and writing songs at the age of 13.
