Soundgarden was formed in 1984 in Seattle, Washington, USA, and is recognized as one of the pioneering bands of the grunge genre, alongside other notable acts. While their sound had a more hard rock and metallic edge compared to some of their contemporaries, their peak came with the 1991 album, which showcased their metallic prowess. The band's 1994 release produced their highest-selling single. Soundgarden amicably parted ways on April 9, 1997, allowing members to pursue other interests, with drummer Matt Cameron joining Pearl Jam in 1998 and vocalist Chris Cornell releasing his first solo album in 1999 before forming a new band in 2001. On January 1, 2010, Chris Cornell announced the band's reunion via social media. Tragically, on May 18, 2017, he was found dead in a hotel room after a show in Detroit. The surviving members of Soundgarden, including original bass player and founding member, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on November 8, 2025.
