The Soweto String Quartet, formed in 1989 at the Madimba School of Music, consists of Sandile Khamese (first violin), Thami Khamese (second violin and youngest brother), Reuben Khamese (cellist and eldest brother), and childhood friend Makhosini Mnguni on viola. Their debut CD, "Zebra Crossing," was released by BMG in 1994 and won three prizes at the first South African Music Awards. The quartet's follow-up album, "Renaissance," released in 1996, garnered another two SAMAs.
