Speakers Corner Quartet is a jazz ensemble hailing from London, England. Initially formed as the house band for the renowned hip-hop and spoken-word open-mic night, Speakers’ Corner in Brixton, the quartet began by providing beats for emcees and lyricists during all-night sessions. Over time, they evolved to create their own original compositions, showcasing their diverse musical abilities that extend beyond simply backing vocalists. The quartet features a unique lineup of cello, flute, contrabass, and drums, which necessitates an unconventional approach to composition, utilizing single lines collectively to form chord structures instead of relying on a traditional harmony instrument. Their influences range from Zakir Hussain and Olivier Messiaen to Sun Ra and MF Doom, contributing to their distinctive sound that resists categorization. This fusion of Asian, classical, jazz, and hip-hop elements is emblematic of what they refer to as 12tone music, positioning the Speakers Corner Quartet as part of a new wave of innovative musicians.
