Skiz Fernando Jr., known by his real name Spectre, began his career as a journalist, contributing articles to various fanzines and magazines, including Rolling Stone. He conducted interviews and wrote for records' back covers. In 1994, he published "The New Beats: exploring the music, culture and attitudes of hip-hop" through Anchor Books. Later that year, with a $1,000 loan from producer Bill Laswell, he founded Wordsound Recordings in December.
