Squirrel Bait was a punk rock band formed in the early 1980s in Louisville, Kentucky, by guitarist David Grubbs and bassist Clark Johnson. Initially known as Squirrelbait Youth, the group released their first demo tape featuring drummer Rich Schuler, with Grubbs handling both guitar and vocals. After Schuler's departure, Britt Walford took over on drums, and Peter Searcy joined as the singer. In July 1984, this lineup recorded ten songs at Sound on Sound, with two tracks appearing on their self-titled EP released by Homestead in 1986, while "Tense/Earth Shattering" was later released in 1987 under a different alias. In May 1985, the band, now including Ben Daughtrey on drums and Brian McMahan on second guitar, returned to the studio to record six more songs. Their self-titled EP, released in the fall of 1985, received critical acclaim, and the same lineup recorded their only LP, 1987's Skag Heaven. The band disbanded shortly after due to personal and musical differences, as well as Grubbs and Johnson's decision to leave Louisville for college. Grubbs and Johnson would later reunite, while McMahan and Walford, who had played together in various bands since middle school, went on to form another group. In the mid-1990s, Grubbs reissued the self-titled EP
