Stanley Mitchell was born on February 10, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, USA. After graduating from Highland Park High School in 1955, he joined his first group, the Cherokons, which gained attention through local talent shows and eventually caught the eye of Lionel Hampton. Under Hampton's guidance, the group changed their name to the Hamptones, which included members Frank Holt, Joe Miles, and Donzelos Gardner. In 1957, Stanley left the Hamptones to form his own group, Stanley Mitchell & the Tornados. He continued to work as a solo artist upon his return to Detroit. In the 1970s, unaware of his newfound popularity in Europe, he formed another group called Stanley Mitchell & the Peoples Choice, which had a more disco-oriented sound. This group remained active until the mid-1990s. Stanley Mitchell passed away on October 14, 2006.
