Starcastle is a progressive rock band hailing from Champaign, Illinois, USA. Originally formed in 1969 under the name Pegasus, the band later changed its name to Mad John Fever before finally adopting the name Starcastle. The group initially emerged from a cover band called ST. JAMES, formed in 1968 by Steve Hagler (guitar), Mike Castlehorn (drums), and Paul Tassler (bass guitar). After the tragic death of Castlehorn in a car accident, Steve Tassler joined the band. After years of practice and material development, Starcastle released their self-titled debut album in 1976, gaining recognition in the USA and Canada despite being labeled as clones of YES. The band went on to release three more albums: "Fountains of Light" (1977), "Citadel" (1977), and the more mainstream "Real to Reel" in 1978, before disbanding. Starcastle experienced several brief reunions over the years. In 2004, the band performed a tribute for Gary Strater, who had been battling pancreatic cancer since 2003, marking his last performance with them. Strater passed away a year later, but the band recorded enough material for their final album, "Song of Times," which was released in 2007. Starcastle reformed again in 2018 after being active from 1997 to 2007.
