Chris Sheehan, born in 1965 in Christchurch, New Zealand, is a singer and multi-instrumentalist known for his work under the name The Starlings. He taught himself guitar as a teenager and joined the new wave band the Dance Exponents in 1983, contributing as a second guitarist and recording three albums with them: Prayers Be Answered, Great Expectations, and Amplifier. After the band disbanded, Sheehan moved to Los Angeles, where he collaborated on a solo album for Jane Wiedlin, the ex-girlfriend of his band’s drummer, Vince Ely. In 1987, Sheehan relocated to London and began recording music as The Starlings in 1989. His first EP, Letters From Heaven, released in 1990 through Rough Trade, featured a notable cover of the Byrds' "Wasn't Born to Follow." He later signed with Anxious Records, founded by ex-Eurythmics member Dave Stewart, and released his first full-length album, Valid, in 1992. This album was created during a challenging period in Sheehan's life, as he struggled with heroin addiction, but he completed rehab the same week it was released. Despite receiving positive reviews, Valid did not achieve commercial success, which Sheehan attributed to his record label.
