Stars Of The Lid is a drone-based ambient music duo formed in Austin, Texas, in 1993. The duo consists of members born in 1969 and 1970 (the latter of whom passed away in 2023). They draw inspiration from minimalist and electronic composers, as well as ambient innovators. Their music features largely beatless soundscapes, characterized by droning, effects-treated guitars, piano, strings, and horns. The absence of rhythmic instruments is compensated by volume swells and feedback, creating dynamic movement within their compositions. Their sound has been described as "divine, classical drone without the tedious intrusion of drums or vocals."
