Stella Chiweshe was a renowned Zimbabwean singer, musician, and actor, born on July 8, 1946, in Mujumi, Mhondoro, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). She passed away on January 20, 2023, in Harare, Zimbabwe. Chiweshe was notable for defying tradition by becoming Africa's most famous female mbira player, an instrument that was traditionally played only by men. After her death, her daughter revealed that "Chiweshe" was a totem she adopted as a stage name.
