Steve Hillage is a UK-based guitarist born on August 2, 1951, in London, England. He began his musical journey with the band Uriel before leaving for college, allowing the band to continue as Egg. After reuniting to record under the pseudonym Arzachel, Hillage collaborated with Kevin Ayers and eventually joined the prog-rock band Gong, where he adopted Daevid Allen's glissando guitar techniques, inspired by Syd Barrett's unique style. Hillage later embarked on a solo career and became known for his innovative guitar sound, characterized by the blending of echoes, reverb, and synthesizers. A pioneer in new age ambient music, he took a hiatus from recording to become a prominent producer in the early 1980s, particularly noted for his work with Simple Minds. Years later, after hearing The Orb sample his music in a club, he reconnected with them, leading to the formation of the ambient techno duo System 7 (also known as 777). Hillage reunited with Gong around 2008, touring with them in 2009 and 2010, and that version of Gong released an album in 2009.
