Steve Roach is a prominent figure in contemporary electronic music, born in 1955 in La Mesa, California. A composer and multi-instrumentalist, he draws inspiration from the beauty and power of the earth's landscapes, creating lush, meditative soundscapes that have significantly influenced the ambient and trance genres. Before his music career, Roach was a professional motorbike racer. He taught himself to play the synthesizer at the age of 20 and debuted in 1982 with his first album. His early works were influenced by various artists, but with the release of his 1984 album, he began to evolve his sound, drawing directly from the natural beauty of the southwestern U.S. His 1986 three-volume Quiet Music series further honed his approach, showcasing dense, swirling textures and hypnotic rhythms. In 1988, inspired by the film The Last Wave, Roach traveled to the Australian outback, where field recordings of Aboriginal life influenced his acclaimed double-album. The following year, he collaborated with a percussionist and guitarist on an ambient jazz project. After moving to the desert outskirts of Tucson, Arizona, Roach established his own recording studio and became increasingly prolific, creating numerous works both as a solo artist and in collaboration with others.
