Stilluppsteypa is an Icelandic experimental and abstract electronic band based in Reykjavik. Founded in 1992 as a trio, the band has operated as a duo since 2002 when one of the original members departed. Initially starting as a punk band, Stilluppsteypa evolved into a more experimental outfit, with all three founding members studying sonology at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in the Netherlands in 1997. Their style is significantly influenced by psychoacoustic and techgnostic research, and they developed a strong relationship with Andrew McKenzie, who moved to Iceland in the mid-'90s. In an interview with The Wire, band member Björgúlfsson acknowledged McKenzie's impact on their musical direction and his introduction of various artists and labels to them. Stilluppsteypa has released over 20 albums and EPs on various labels, including solo projects and collaborations with artists such as The Hafler Trio. Since the mid-2000s, they have collaborated with Swedish-born sound artist and composer, producing ten albums together.
