Sting, born Gordon Sumner on October 2, 1951, in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, North East England, is a British musician, singer, songwriter, composer, bassist, actor, author, and activist. He moved to London in 1977 to form the band The Police with Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland. The band released five studio albums, earned six Grammy Awards and two Brit Awards, and was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Sting earned his nickname when he performed in a black and yellow hooped jersey, which led bandleader Gordon Sumner to remark that he looked like a bumblebee. He uses the name Sting almost exclusively, except on official documents, and has humorously mentioned that even his children call him Sting. In 1988, he established the Rainforest Fund, which he co-founded with his wife, to protect the world's rainforests and the indigenous people living there. Throughout his career as a solo artist, Sting has received an additional 11 Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, four Oscar nominations, a TONY nomination, Billboard Magazine’s Century Award, and the MusiCares 2004 Person of the Year award.
