Stomu Yamash'ta is a Japanese percussionist, keyboardist, composer, and experimental artist, born on March 15, 1947, in Kyoto. He is probably best known for leading the jazz-rock fusion group Go, which released three albums between 1976 and 1977. Yamash'ta studied at the Kyoto Academy of Music and made his solo concert debut at the age of 16. He spent the years 1964 to 1969 in the United States, studying with both jazz and classical musicians. His early releases featured interpretations of classical music or neo-classical pieces composed specifically for him. In 1971, he released "Red Buddha," an avant-garde all-percussion solo work that has been reissued multiple times. In 1972, he began recording jazz-rock fusion albums infused with Japanese traditional influences, starting with "Floating Music" and a short-lived band. In 1973, he formed a group that included keyboardist, guitarist, and bassist, releasing two albums: "Freedom Is Frightening" (1973) and the soundtrack "One By One" (1974). This group also contributed to his next album, "Raindog" (1975), which featured vocals by other artists. He later formed a fusion supergroup that included notable musicians.
