Stone Garden was a psychedelic group from Lewiston, Idaho, active from the mid-1960s until 1972. Originally known as The Knights Of Sound, the band consisted of the Speer brothers—Gary (guitar, lead vocals), Paul (guitar), and Neal (drums, piano)—along with their neighbor and schoolmate, bassist Dan Merrell. In 1967, they adopted the name Stone Garden, inspired by a psychedelic poster. By early 1969, the quartet expanded to include multi-instrumentalist John Purviance and signed a recording deal with Doug Smith, a recording engineer and studio owner. They recorded two tracks that were pressed as a single in a limited run of 300 copies. Over the years, the band experienced various personnel changes until their breakup in 1972, a decision made by Paul Speer, the group's leader. Following the split, he became a prolific record producer and engineer, also pursuing a solo career.
