Stuart Dempster (born July 7, 1936, Berkeley, California, USA) is an American trombonist, didgeridoo player, improviser, and composer. He was inspired by both traditional music and the avant-garde. While studying music, he met a lifelong friend and collaborator. Mostly known for playing the trombone, Dempster also performed with various unconventional instruments such as garden hoses, pipes, and conch shells. He is recognized as one of the first Americans to play the didgeridoo. Dempster was on the faculty of the University of Washington in Seattle from 1969 until his retirement, influencing generations of younger players. Although not often recorded, he continues to perform live and enjoys being part of different ensembles and exploring various styles. Among his better-known collaborations are with notable artists and groups. He is married and has two sons, including a cellist.
