Sudden Sway was formed in 1980 by Mike McGuire (vocals) and Steve Rolls (guitar) after the disbandment of their first-generation punk band, The Now. They later recruited Pete Jostins (bass), Shaun Foreman (guitar & keyboards), and Colin Meech (drums), with various other contributors in their early days. The band drew initial influence from groups like A Certain Ratio and Shriekback. Their first releases included two self-financed singles: "Jane's Third Party" in 1980 and the To You, With Regard EP in 1981, which garnered enough success to attract interest from major labels CBS and Virgin Records. After releasing another single on their own 'Chant' label and adding guitarist Simon Childs as a permanent member, Sudden Sway signed with Warner's subsidiary Blanco y Negro, debuting in 1986 with the single "Sing Song" in eight versions. They later released the Spacemate package, a double LP, book, poster, set of cards, and instruction manual, all packaged in a soap box container designed by Jon Wozencroft. The band subsequently moved to indie label Rough Trade Records, where they remained for the rest of their career. Their affinity for remixes was showcased in their first Rough Trade release, a 7-inch EP titled "Autumn Cut Back Job Lot Offer," featuring eight one-minute songs, released in early 1987. In
