Sugar Pie De Santo was an American R&B singer, songwriter, and dancer, born on October 16, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York. She passed away on December 20, 2024. Growing up in San Francisco, California, she was the daughter of an African-American mother and a Filipino father. Among her childhood friends was a girl who would later gain fame. In the 1950s and 1960s, Sugar Pie toured with prominent artists and collaborated with others in the music industry. She was married to a man known as Parham, after which she changed her name. Following their divorce, she relocated to Chicago, where she continued to record successfully and write songs for other artists, often collaborating with a partner. Sugar Pie De Santo received several accolades throughout her career, including a Bay Area Music Award in 1999 for Best Female Blues Singer, a Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in September 2008, and a lifetime achievement award from the Goldie Awards in November 2009.
