Suicidal Tendencies is a hardcore punk and metal band from the United States, formed in 1981 in Venice, California, by vocalist Mike Muir. Muir has been the band's only constant member, while rhythm guitarist Mike Clark was part of the group from 1988 until 2013. The band began as a hardcore punk act, achieving unexpected success with their self-titled debut album in 1983, which featured the hit song "Institutionalized." The song received heavy rotation on the popular Southern California radio station KROQ, and a music video was produced in 1985 that gained significant airplay on MTV. In 1984, the band was banned from performing live in Los Angeles due to concerns about crowd violence, a ban that lasted until the early 1990s. By the end of the 1980s, Suicidal Tendencies had transitioned into a thrash metal band and started incorporating funk influences into their music. In 1995, the group announced their split, marking the end of their most commercially successful period. However, Muir and Clark reformed the band in 1996 with new members, and it continues to perform today, although their recorded output has been limited since reuniting. Throughout their career, Muir has also led several side projects and his own solo act, often featuring other members of Suicidal Tendencies.
