Summoning is an Austrian black metal band formed in 1993 by Protector (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Silenius (vocals, bass, keyboard), and Trifixion (drums). They are recognized as pioneers of Tolkien-inspired black metal. The band released two demos in 1994, "Anno Mortiri Domini" and "Upon the Viking's Stallion," before signing with Napalm Records and releasing their debut full-length album, "Lugburz," in 1995, which featured the song "Pazuzu." Following this release, Trifixion was dismissed from the band, leading to a shift in focus towards keyboard elements, as showcased in their second album, "Minas Morgul," also released in 1995. In 1997, Summoning released their third album, "Dol Guldur," along with the EP "Nightshade Forests," which included songs that were not included in the album. After a two-year hiatus, they returned with "Stronghold" in 1999, featuring Tania Borsky. This was followed by "Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame" in 2001 and the EP "Lost Tales" in 2003. In 2006, they released their sixth full-length album, "Oathbound," which marked a shift in their guitar style to a more open and floating approach, incorporating more choral elements.
