Sumy, born on August 24, 1957, in Paramaribo, Surinam, is a Surinam-Dutch funk musician, singer, songwriter, and producer. His nickname, Sumy, is short for 'Surinam Baby.' He began his music career in 1979 after transitioning from playing self-made instruments as a hobby to purchasing real instruments, including a Hammond organ, a Rhodes piano, and a PPG synthesizer. Sumy wrote, recorded, and released his first single on his own independent label while performing with his band, The Freaky Thangs. His single gained airplay thanks to radio DJ Theo Stokkink, leading to a licensing deal with Philips Records in Hilversum for future releases. Since 1986, he has been known as Krisnallah, and from 2002, he has used the name Krisnallah Sumy. All of his music is currently governed by his record company.
